NEIGHBORHOOD
The Porta Sempione neighborhood, nestled between the Sforza Castle and the large green space of Sempione Park, is a corner of Milan rich in historical charm, urban regeneration, and cultural vitality. It is an ideal crossroads of austere monuments, modern architecture, and relaxing spaces, perfect for those who love a Milan that combines beauty and serenity.
Porta Sempione and the Arch of Peace
The monumental Arch of Peace (Arco della Pax), the emblem of the neighborhood, dates back to the Napoleonic era and is one of the most elegant neoclassical triumphal arches in the city, inaugurated in 1838 to celebrate the European peace after the Congress of Vienna. From here, the enchanting Sempione Park begins, spanning over 47 hectares and designed in an "English garden" style, with lawns, ponds, rare botanical species, and extensive access for residents and visitors.
Inside the Park
The park is a cultural and landscape hub: it houses the striking steel Branca Tower, designed by G. Ponti in 1933, which offers breathtaking views of the city and the Alps; the Palazzo dell’Arte (Triennale), a design and temporary exhibition center; and the elegant Civic Aquarium, one of the oldest in Europe, with its display cases dedicated to Italian marine fauna. Among the scattered sculptures are de Chirico's "Mysterious Baths," Arman's "Musical Accumulation," and Burri's Teatro Continuo, an original scenic installation.
Experiencing Porta Sempione
The neighborhood thrives with tree-lined avenues, paths for walking or jogging (also rated excellent by the Financial Times), and outdoor cultural events, including art, pop-ups, and relaxation. It's a perfect place to unwind, read under the plane trees, organize picnics, or simply enjoy the silence just steps from the city center.
Neighborhoods to Explore
Sforza Castle, an imposing Renaissance fortress now home to civic museums, courtyards, and libraries.
A short distance away, the Brera area offers a bohemian atmosphere among workshops, galleries, and the famous Pinacoteca di Brera.
Porta Nuova and Piazza Gae Aulenti, to the east, represent the contemporary face of Milan: a modern skyline, iconic skyscrapers, and innovative public spaces.
To the south, Chinatown offers ethnic cuisine, design, and a multicultural atmosphere; a design itinerary like the Fuorisalone often includes the Triennale area in its map.
In Summary
Porta Sempione is an urban treasure where history and nature harmoniously intertwine. With the Arco della Pace leading to Parco Sempione, the area offers culture, relaxation, views, and contemporary art in a single, expansive landscape. The surrounding areas—from the Castello to the Brera district, from the modernity of Porta Nuova to the multiculturalism of Chinatown—complete a Milanese mosaic of past and future, ideal for exploring on foot or by bicycle.
