NEIGHBORHOOD
The Navigli district, located southwest of the center of Milan, is one of the most fascinating and lively areas of the city. Famous for its historic canals, this district offers a unique mix of history, culture, art and nightlife.
History and Characteristics
The Navigli are a system of artificial canals built between the 12th and 16th centuries for irrigation and navigation purposes, connecting Milan to the main waterways of Lombardy. These canals played a crucial role in the economic development of the city, facilitating the transport of goods and people. Today, the district retains the charm of the past, with its typical tenement houses, artisan workshops and ancient wash houses covered by roofs on wooden beams.
Places of Interest
Naviglio Grande: It is the oldest and most important of Milan's canals, known for its picturesque banks dotted with clubs, restaurants and boutiques. A walk along the Naviglio Grande offers suggestive views and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the bohemian atmosphere of the neighborhood.
Naviglio Pavese: Connects Milan to Pavia and, although less touristy than the Naviglio Grande, offers characteristic corners and a lively local scene.
Darsena: Located near Porta Ticinese, the Darsena is the ancient port of Milan, recently redeveloped. Today it is a much-loved meeting point, with green spaces, markets and bars overlooking the water.
Vicolo dei Lavandai: A picturesque corner where washerwomen once washed clothes in the canal. Today it represents a historical testimony to Milanese daily life in the past.
Church of San Cristoforo sul Naviglio: An architectural jewel composed of two churches side by side, dating back to the 13th and 15th centuries, known for their brick facade and interior frescoes.
Cultural and Nightlife
The neighborhood is renowned for its lively nightlife. Along the Navigli there are bars, restaurants and clubs offering aperitifs and live music, attracting both residents and tourists. In addition, the area is home to numerous art galleries, artists' studios and cultural spaces, making it a vibrant hub for lovers of art and creativity.
Events and Markets
Periodically, antique, craft and vintage markets are held along the Navigli, offering the opportunity to discover unique objects and immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. One of the most famous events is the Mercatone dell'Antiquariato, which takes place on the last Sunday of every month along the Naviglio Grande.
Neighboring Areas
Porta Genova: Historic train station and access point to the Navigli, the surrounding area is full of trendy clubs and design shops.
Porta Ticinese: Area characterized by a lively youth scene, with numerous bars, alternative shops and a strong artistic imprint.
Zona Tortona: Known for the Fuorisalone during the design week, it is a creative neighborhood with showrooms, galleries and exhibition spaces.
In short, the Navigli district and its surrounding areas are an essential stop for those visiting Milan, offering an authentic experience that combines history, culture and entertainment in a unique context.
