The villa is located in the upper, panoramic part of Taormina, in a quiet residential area that allows guests to enjoy the historic center on foot without sacrificing peace and privacy. Corso Umberto I, the vibrant heart of the town with boutiques, restaurants, and cafés, is just a few minutes away, while the elevated position offers constant views over the gulf and Mount Etna. The area is ideal for those wishing to alternate beach days with cultural and gastronomic experiences, always returning to a peaceful setting in the evening.
⸻
GETTING AROUND
The historic center is easily walkable. To reach the sea, the most convenient option is the cable car connecting Taormina to Mazzarò, with Isola Bella just a short walk from the lower station. The cable car departs from Via Luigi Pirandello near the center. It generally runs every 15 minutes, with schedules varying by season; as a general reference, it often operates from around 8:00 a.m. until late evening.
For longer distances, taxis and private transfers are readily available. If arriving by train, Taormina–Giardini station is located below the town and can be reached in a few minutes by taxi or local bus.
⸻
HOW TO GET THERE
By plane
The main airport is Catania Fontanarossa. From there, Taormina can be reached by private car or by direct bus services to the Via Luigi Pirandello area, with travel times of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes depending on traffic.
Alternatively, you can take the train to Taormina–Giardini station and then continue uphill by taxi or bus.
By car
The villa is accessible by car and offers private on-site parking. Taormina has limited traffic zones (ZTL), particularly near the historic center, with rules and schedules that may vary. We recommend following the directions we will provide after booking to avoid ZTL areas and to reach the property and parking smoothly.
ARRIVING AT THE VILLA
After booking, we will share precise directions and a reference point for the final stretch to make arrival and parking easier. For evening arrivals or larger vehicles, we recommend a private transfer or taxi for maximum comfort.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
A bit of history
The original villa, known as the Family House, was built in the early 1950s by Aenne Burda, a German publisher and founder of the renowned magazine Burda Moden. Many original features remain today, including the garden layout with historic trees and plants, the façade, and the red marble interior floors.
Our family, the Scimone family, purchased the property in 1998 from Mrs. Burda’s grandchildren. Since then, we have renovated the original house while preserving its character and added the Upper House and panoramic terraces that now complete the estate.
The interiors tell our family’s story through a mix of antique and contemporary furnishings, personal objects, and books in several languages. Many of the antique pieces belonged to our Anglo-Swiss grandparents, Charles and Mary Schorno. The landscape paintings of Taormina are by our father, Egisto Scimone, while the contemporary drawings are by the well-known Milanese artist Luigi Rigamonti, who also contributed to the architectural design of the villa. Portraits and floral paintings are by Taormina-based artist Dori Vasta, while the large, vibrant canvases depicting dancers are by Sicilian painter Nino Carnabuci.
In the 1950s, our father founded the famous venue La Giara together with his older brother Chico Scimone, an Italian-American pianist and sportsman. La Giara soon became a focal point of Taormina’s social life, frequented by orchestras, artists, and numerous Italian and international actors, especially during the Taormina Film Festival.
Today, the villa preserves this legacy of art, culture, and hospitality, offering guests not just a place to stay, but a home with an authentic history deeply connected to Taormina.
