NEIGHBORHOOD
Milan's Chinatown, the area around Via Paolo Sarpi, is a microcosm where East and West meet in a kaleidoscope of colors, flavors, and cultures. Born in the 1920s as an area of artisans and greengrocers, it quickly became the beating heart of Milan's Chinese communities, and today it is a vibrant, authentic, and surprising urban experience.
Walking along the pedestrian-only Via Paolo Sarpi, redeveloped between 2010 and 2011 with porphyry paving, bike-friendly features, and hanging red lanterns, you'll experience a unique atmosphere: among ideogram signs, clothing boutiques, tech stores, ethnic supermarkets like Oriental Mall and Kathay Food, and hipster bars offering unusual openings, such as aperitivos in deconsecrated churches.
The neighborhood's gastronomic soul invites discovery: from dim sum brunch to robata, from hot pots to bubble tea, not to mention street food—especially "jianbing," a stuffed Chinese crepe—and restaurants specializing in regional cuisines like Zhejiang and Sichuan.
Among the must-see experiences: the Paolo Sarpi Market, a multiethnic bazaar of spices, utensils, and oriental products; the Chinese Cultural Center, which organizes courses, events, and exhibitions; and the Fabbrica del Vapore, a former industrial area now a creative hub for exhibitions and performances.
Chinatown is also a vibrant hub of events: Chinese New Year, with a parade of dragons, lanterns, and drums from Piazza Gramsci to Sarpi, attracts tens of thousands of visitors and is now among the most engaging celebrations in Europe.
Nearby: the Monumental Cemetery, a true open-air museum of sculpture and architecture; the ADI Design Museum—a temple of Italian industrial design; The evocative Ca' di Facc, a little-known yet fascinating Art Nouveau building in Piazzale Baiamonti.
Chinatown intertwines with equally fascinating neighboring areas: to the west, the Monumental Cemetery and the Moscova River, gateway to Porta Garibaldi; to the south, Porta Volta and the Porta Nuova area, with a modern skyline and skyscrapers where art and business interact; to the northeast, Turro and the Naviglio Martesana offer cycle paths and street art for those who want to explore beyond the urban Chinatown.
In summary
Chinatown is much more than an ethnic neighborhood: it is a multi-sensory urban experience, combining authentic flavors, street design, rituals, and fusion. From strolling under the lanterns to discovering regional Chinese flavors, from vibrant markets to spectacular festivals, every corner speaks to the dialogue between cultures. The surrounding area offers stimulating contrasts: from the monumental to the contemporary, from greenery to design.
